My gripe

I know, I know…

I should be doing something constructive, like reading “Organizing for the Long Term” or start to understand terms like standard deviations or analysis of variance…

But I have to write this down.

Seriously, I think this coming to school and treating every where you go as a bookstore has to stop.

Or even better, coming to school and not being able to read is an even graver offense.

Taking the cake is coming to school and developing amnesia, especially when the object of concern involves your school bag.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, the top three epidemics sweeping across campus now as I write…

1. Multiple-Bookstores Sighting Disorder
Also known as MBSD, persons plagued with this rare disease are unable to differentiate between bookstores and other places besides the bookstores. People with MBSD will have the ongoing illusion that everywhere they go is a bookstore. Serious case of MBSD will also have the wrong illusion that these places that they go to are bookstores with benefits, meaning they can get whatever they need for free. Be it paper, pens, pencils, staplers, scissors, notebooks, files, etc. And people with such disorder think that such items are available everywhere, hence giving it the term multiple-bookstores sighting. They can borrow pens from the computer lab, paper from strangers, and even a notebook from someone who is eating at the canteen. Most often than not, MBSD sufferers can't seem to remember to return the items after use. With correct and timely treatments, such as forcing such items into their schoolbags before they head off to school, such disorders can be managed. However people with MBSD and Misplaced-Memory-Syndrome (MMS) may suffer relapses should they misplace such items. In such situations, the cure can only be a forced-payment-inducing treatment and shock therapy, such as $15 for a ballpoint pen.

1. Acute-Ignoring-Signs-Disability
AISD is a relatively new disorder that strikes people who are going to college, but its occurrences are becoming more widespread and is on the way to become developed-nations' epidemic. People with AISD are prone to ignore signs or instructions pasted at strategic locations. Hence, they are always prone to put themselves in danger or placing others at an inconvenience. Severe cases of AISD are unable to process the importance of signs and instructions even when placed in close proximity or repeated every 5 inches. To them, signs are just like a part of the natural growth of mother earth, like trees, tables, or mouse pads. Nevertheless, AISD is especially detrimental for the patient because they have a tendency to place themselves in high states of emotional disturbance due to their disability. For instance, printing class schedules using firefox instead of safari will lead to problems with displaying their grades on paper. Of course, the disorder will lead them to ignore every single sign that is pasted every 5 inches away and they will repeatedly print their class schedules using firefox and each time greeted with printed papers full of mumbo-jumbos. Milder cases of AISD will realize something is amiss after about 8 pieces of misprinting, and proceed to ask others around them, who will direct them to the signs. This usually entails guiding their hands to the sign, tilting their heads, pointing your fingers at the signs, and reading the sign out. AISD patients will normally remember the instructions if pointed out to them. Severe cases of AISD will continue their normal routine, and each time cursing people around them, not knowing that things will work if they simply READ the SIGNS around them.

3. Chronic-Amnesia-Syndrome
Cases of CAS are rare, but is a growing trend, especially in the educational institutions. Symptoms include leaving their bags unattended, forgetting to take their jackets with them, or placing their wallets and leaving the scene. Distinct from carelessness which is defined more as accidentally , CAS is the ongoing symptom of being unaware of one's own belongings. In fact, in severe cases, CAS patients hardly knows what they brought out of the house 5 minutes ago. As this case is still new and growing, more research has to be done to find out the causes and cures for the CAS.
